The Ethos Weekly, Vol. 13
It used to be enough to chase the number.
Quota was king.
And if a rep missed it? “Work harder.” “Sell bigger.” “Dial more.”
But in today’s market – where buyers are smarter, sales cycles are more complex, and talent churn is at an all-time high – that Boiler Room mindset is no longer outdated.
It’s downright toxic.
Sales has morphed from a factory line position into a high-performing team sport. If you cannot or will not collaborate to improve customer experience (CX/UX), you’re doomed to fail long-term.
What Culture Really Looks Like
Culture is the compounding force behind every metric that matters.
It’s the rep who actually qualifies solutions instead of just pushing units. It’s the manager who coaches for true progress, not just activities. It’s that rare sales org that enables trust instead of forcing compliance; or worse, Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD).
Culture is:
- The team that adapts the GTM playbook to buyer behavior, not just internal pressure.
- The VP who makes training strategic, not just mandatory. Who doesn’t say “read the deck,” but asks, “What do you need to win?”.. and delivers.
That’s enablement. That’s alignment. That’s what culture looks like when it’s done right. Not sure how to gauge your culture? Simply ask how an individual/team/organization feels on Sunday night about Monday morning.
Reflective of the worst environments I’ve been a part of, the term “Sunday Scaries” was coined to accurately depict how one feels on Sunday night when they know they’re reporting to a toxic work environment/team on Monday morning.
“Just Hit Your Number”
Here’s the lie old-school sales leaders keep telling themselves:
“Quota is culture.”
It’s not.
Quota is output. Culture determines whether that output is repeatable, and overall how scalable thereafter.
Quota says: “Do it again.”
Great Culture says: “How can we do it better? More consistently?”
And when the pressure’s on, only one of those creates LIFT for an organization in the long run.
Enabled selling isn’t just about training decks and tech stacks – it’s about real-time access to insights, and deeper analytics than we’ve had access to before. It’s about empowering reps with contextual data, and tools that reduce friction instead of adding it.
In short? Enabled selling aligns sellers with their buyers faster, and in a much more qualified, efficient, scalable fashion.
A few of my favorite examples for those keeping track at home? Thought you’d never ask.
– Customer Resource Management (CRM) platforms now offer “call coaching” to sales reps, completely powered by AI and completely unique to the call at hand.
– Qualified Leads lists that continually search for Net-New contacts who fit the criteria, and initiate outreach.
– Systems that put massive time back into the old-school sales rep’s day by simply logging the tasks on their behalf.
…all so reps can maintain a forward focus and ultimately sell more.
Great Culture = Conversion
The best closers I’ve ever worked with didn’t just have fat pipelines..
They had strong values.
They disqualified early.
They asked deeper questions.
They brought elite confidence because they were coached in how to navigate (not manipulate) the deal.
Great culture teaches reps that it’s okay to lose bad-fit deals. Teaches that how you sell matters more than the slide deck you used to sell it. And when the floor’s not falling out beneath you every month, reps stay longer, ramp faster, and actually grow into polished pros instead of burning out or bailing for the competition.
Let’s set the record straight.
Great culture isn’t ping pong tables and motivational quotes on the conference room walls. It’s not pot lucks, and it sure isn’t unattainable incentives.
It’s how you hire, train, coach, and dare I say most importantly.. how you execute.
It’s openly giving the permission to sell with integrity. The expectation to do the hard things right, even if it costs short-term gains to preserve long-term reputation and scalability.
Because a toxic culture might get you to this quarter’s quota…
But a healthy one?
It gets you to the next decade’s dominance by building a Team that earns their capital “T”, year-in and year-out. One that performs with more than confidence.. they conquer with genuine chemistry.
We’re entering a new era where ethical sales, modern tech, and cultural alignment are prerequisites rather than perks. If your team isn’t enabled to thrive – they’re being encouraged to churn.
Curious how to build a Team that earns the capital “T”? That’s what I do. Let’s talk about what a close ratio LIFT would do for your business.
