The Algorithm Aversion… Buyer Beware!

Elemental Sales Enablement

AI has become the ultimate sales accelerant… and illusion.

Don’t believe me? Take a look around you this week.

It’s in every pitch deck, every marketing campaign, and every product description that once just said “automated.”

Fact is, the buzz around AI is so loud it’s become downright deafening.

Everyone’s selling it, but it seems very few can explain it (or even how theirs works).

This has – in record time I might add – created a marketplace where confidence sold faster than competence for a time, and now both buyers and sellers are starting to feel the hangover.

The Hype Hangover

The flood of “AI-powered” promises has eroded trust faster than any single technology that came before it.

Buyers have started to assume exaggeration. Sellers are now over-explaining to somehow prove they’re not exaggerating, and the cycle repeats.

We’ve entered this realm of algorithm aversion. That is, a psychological recoil of sorts, that happens when people can’t see or understand the system’s inner-workings.

As such, we’ve hit a moment in time where the average buyer doesn’t just question what AI can do… they are now more frequently question who to believe about it.

Sales in the Trust Deficit

Now it’s no secret that sales was already well-seated in a trust deficit, but for modern sellers this is also an unprecedented opportunity.

On one hand, AI companies are paying astronomical commissions just to sound credible in a sea of sameness. When every solution claims it, the language loses meaning.

On the other hand, this is the perfect time for the ethical seller to rise.

While everyone’s racing to sound like the future, the one who slows down to explain the present and provide some clarity in this whirlwind of AI tools and toys wins.

The one who protects the buyer by educating them to the point they understand your solution well enough to explain it themselves.

That’s a key difference between salesmanship and good stewardship. The latter pays your bills for much longer, I assure you!

A Lesson from the Last Revolution

Now before you get all jazzed up watching the murmurs on the local news… we’ve been here before.

When door-knocking gave way to telecommuting (and again when emails became the front-runner) the sellers who thrived were the ones who adapted their methods without abandoning sound principles.

AI is this generation’s telecommute moment, and make no mistake, it’s rewriting the rules of credibility in business and for us in sales.

The more advanced and complex our tools become, the more buyers crave something they can trust… you.

I had the pleasure of crossing paths with a lady named Linda in Georgia earlier this year. She was sharp as a whip, and we had a great conversation sharing sales strategies and tactics as she drove me to the airport.

She hit on this exact concept better than I’ve heard.

I can’t stand it when I see a little old lady who can barely see over her steering wheel, because that means the salesperson didn’t take 7 seconds to show them how to properly adjust their seat.

She had hit the nail on the head.

To that little old lady who bought the car, adjusting a seat was once a simple lever to be pulled, but is likely seen as a complex mechanism now. One that she simply didn’t understand, and therefore wasn’t using in a way that was a true solution for her.

Now, in a world of automated outreach, writing, and even order taking at the local fast-food spot, human discernment is the newest differentiator.

Buyer Beware. Sellers, Be Aware.

AI isn’t going away. Neither is the skepticism that shadows it.

If you sell it, represent it, or rely on it, your advantage won’t come from the product itself as much as it’ll come from your posture in the coming weeks and months.

Slow down your demos. Ask questions that dig more deeply into motivations (and reservations). There are some really cool AI tools out there already, but we’ve got to ensure we establish trust before we automate it.

It’s the age of algorithms where ethics is no longer a soft skill; it’s your best survival strategy and your competitive edge.

While everyone else races to scale intelligence, the future will belong to those who scale integrity alongside it.
